Marshall, Alfred

Marshall, Alfred
(1842-1924)
An English economist, author of the highly influential Principles of Economics (1890), and (among other things) contributor to the marginalist revolution (see neo-classical economics ) of the 1870s in economics. Marshall is principally of interest to sociologists because, in The Structure of Social Action (1937), Talcott Parsons reviews his work and claims to find therein a significant critique of the notion of marginal utility in an implicit theory of values, a residual category which falls logically outside the analytical scheme of economics, and provides a justification for the theoretical framework of sociology in general and Parsons's ‘action frame of reference’ in particular.
